What We Learned: Illinois

1. This is not a very good football team I mean, what more is there to say? With Kellen Lewis out, injuries abounding in the secondary, a defense that was supposed to be significantly better and an offense that has never really gotten into sync, what can you expect? You might expect IU to be competitive, but that’s not what’s happening. We’ve known why this is happening for a couple weeks. The depth is not there, and Big Ten depth takes a long time to build. We thought maybe the talent was there, but it hasn’t been this year, partially because of injury. Look at what happened in East Lansing this weekend. Michigan State has put together its best team since at least the Saban era, and they were outclassed an Ohio State team that many people don’t believe is anything special. The gaps between the tiers in the Big Ten are so great, especially this year. And IU is on the wrong side of all of those gaps this year.

2. Bill Lynch is on the hot seat I don’t think it’s right, but it’s true. Bill Lynch’s job is in jeopardy, and it will remain in jeopardy until the new AD is hired and decides not to fire him. His contract, by Big Ten standards, is very cheap. Indiana’s big budget surplus would give them the means to fire Lynch and pay a new coach a decent amount. A factor in Lynch’s extension was IU coming off a bowl game and his ties to Hep, and now both are fading a bit. Not to mention, at least one name that IU fans would consider a huge name is out there for the taking. Should IU let Lynch go, the coup would be to bring in Tommy Bowden, who you think would listen considering he just got fired from a football crazed school for achieving a level of success IU fans would be thrilled by. So for what it’s worth (and this will be talked about more later as the season winds down), Lynch is on the hot seat. His status is up-in-the-air, and that fact alone will work against the behind-schedule construction project that is IU Football.

I think the biggest problem isn’t that IU isn’t good. It’s that the team is not getting better week to week. Lets face it: this team wasn’t going to contend for the B10 title. But guys aren’t getting any better or playing any smarter.
